Should you expand / add on new services to your flower business?

Flower peoples!

This week’s episode goes deep on a listener’s question. She messaged me on Instagram and asked:

Kathleen, what are your thoughts on adding on additional floristry services to my business? Do you think it’s better to expand your offering and add on an online retail store, weddings and / or corporates? Or, should I just stick to one area?

I LOVE this question for so many reasons.

Listen in as I share a few thoughts on how to approach this situation and – like everything else in managing your business – there is no one right answer.

Instead, I outlined a few different considerations and questions to ask before immediately jumping in and assuming it’s an easy add.

Overcoming the fear of being too expensive – 4 Tips

One of the most common fears I hear from my students is ‘I can’t charge that much!’.

Most often it’s said in response to us talking through the pricing model, after I show them how their prices need to account for labour, flower / foliage, taxes, operations AND profit.

It’s such an instinctive reaction once you’re shown what your pricing SHOULD ACTUALLY BE.

I spent the first three years of this business way way way UNDERCHARGING and my guess is you’re doing the same thing.

In today’s episode, I share my top four tips for overcoming the fear of being too expensive.

Considering your first hire? 10 Tips

Flower peoples!

In this week’s podcast, I’m sharing my top 10 tips for those of you looking to make your first hire.

Also, one of my favourite learnings is putting up an application form on our website with some juicy questions on it.

Check it out here.

I love love love this approach and so wish we had started it earlier. Even if you don’t think you’re anywhere near hiring someone yet, I’d still suggest you put up a page like this on your website and ask a few pointed questions – that way you can easily filter out the winners from the duds without having to do any work. Hello! That is my idea of a  good idea!

As well, one of the best questions you can consider is whether a piece of technology or software can help you – paying $30-$40 per month might for a subscription be a better option than paying $30 an hour for a human’s assistance.

One of the best investments we’ve made in our business is Tave – it’s a studio management system that helps us coordinate all our events and keeps track of where we’re up to with every enquiry, booking and completed project. Here’s the link to a free 60 day trial. It’s absolutely worth the monthly subscription price!

And, even if you’re not sure about when you want to hire another pair of hands, there are some super useful tips in this episode to get you set up for making your first hire – 6, 12, or even 18 months from now.

Should I set a minimum? 4 things to consider

Flower peoples!

In this week’s episode, I’m sharing the ins and outs of setting a minimum order value for weddings & events.

It’s not an easy ‘yes or no’ response – everyone’s business is unique and your situation is going to be different to the next persons.

But here are a few ideas to ponder:

  1. How easy is it for you to access wholesale flower product? Do you need to go to the flower market or can you have product couriered to you?
  2. In making your recipes and planning your ingredients, remember you will be buying to whole bundles and bunches. You will need to make sure you minimum value covers for that (i.e. it’s not possible to buy 2 stems of carnations, you need to buy a full pack of
  3. What is the opportunity cost of your time and energy in all that needs to go into the event (planning, production and delivery)?
  4. You can always change your minimum – don’t feel this has to be set in stone from now until the end of time
